Commons:Categories for discussion/2025/12/Category:Burials in the United States by cemetery
Starting this CfD based on the discussion at the Village Pump. Pinging all active participants: @RoyZuo, Auntof6, Omphalographer, Ooligan, Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), Jmabel, and Nakonana:
RoyZuo had started a discussion at the Village Pump on whether people should be categorized like this. Currently the vote is split, with 2 votes in favor and 2 against abolishing this category tree. The votes in favor argue that these categories create abstract relationships based on metadata rather than exist to diffuse media, with the votes against being primarily concerned that information will be lost if these categories are phased out.
I'd like to suggest an alternative: that they be moved to the gallery space, where they can be maintained by ListeriaBot, a bot that automatically updates these galleries based on information at Wikidata. I have an example of what Category:Burials at the Congressional Cemetery as a gallery could look like in my user space.
This gallery is more comprehensive than the subcategories at Commons and arguably even more than the category at en:Category:Burials at the Congressional Cemetery that it mirrors, as it contains everyone with a Wikidata entry buried at the Congressional Cemetery, not just people with a Commons category or Wikipedia article. The subcat on Commons for Burials at the Congressional Cemetery contains 63 subcats, Wikipedia has 118, the gallery has 287 entries. In addition to that, entries can be sorted by information in the columns such as name or date of death, and columns can be added, removed or replaced.
Category:Burials in the United States by cemetery would remain in place, but would (eventually) contain galleries rather than subcategories. --ReneeWrites (talk) 23:42, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
Neutral just so long as the information ends up somewhere. - Jmabel ! talk 00:01, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
Comment I've spent some considerable time organizing the graves and burials categories, with a special focus on the subcategory Category:Recipients of the Medal of Honor by place of burial. My head is spinning a bit; I'm inclined to just keep both the graves and burials categories as they are. Would Category:Births in New York City, for example, be another category that creates abstract relationships based on metadata? — WFinch (talk) 02:31, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
Oppose per reason given by @WFinch, an experienced editor in these categories -- Ooligan (talk) 07:24, 27 December 2025 (UTC)

Comment I like the idea of having galleries for (notable) cemeteries. Whether we end up keeping the burials categories or not, I think that galleries would make a good addition either way.
Another thing that could be added to the gallery are links to the Wikidata item of the tombstones and maybe even the wiki article of the tombstones because some of the burial sites are considered cultural heritage and therefore may have an item/article of their own with additional information.

- Thank you, and I think I'll do that after this CfD has run its course. There doesn't seem to be any support to remove the categories, and while I'd initially proposed the galleries as an alternative, there's no reason we can't have both. I like the idea of adding the category for the grave to the gallery as well, but I don't know how to do that (or if it's even possible); you can add a photo of the grave or tombstone to a person's Wikidata page, but not the category for the grave itself. Strong consensus to keep the categories in place. --ReneeWrites (talk) 22:35, 13 January 2026 (UTC)
