What does it mean this work was created by me

[edit]

i took the picture only Bimshure (talk) 03:42, 3 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. When you take a photo, e.g., the one you took recently, publishing the image as your own work does not assert that you own copyright on the boat depicted.
When you take a photo of many types of outdoor, permanent thing in many countries, Freedom of Panorama applies. If it's art, that may or may not complicate it. EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth (talk) 00:59, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth: I think that answer is more confusing than helpful.
@Bimshure: Assuming you are talking about uploading a photo with the Upload Wizard, there are two separate questions, neither one worded exactly that way. First, you choose "This work was created by me and anyone is free to use it." That means you took the photo. Then if you choose "This work was entirely created by me" it means that the photo does not show any copyrighted work created by someone else.
For what it's worth, the Upload Wizard does not do a great job of dealing with the issue of Freedom of Panorama that EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth mentions. If someone else's copyrighted work is alright to show based on Freedom of Panorama, you would do best to choose "Yes, the work is not protected by any copyright law," even though that is not strictly true. If relevant (I don't think it is needed for the particular photo cited by EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth), you can add a template from Category:FoP templates by hand after uploading; unfortunately, the Wizard does not walk you through this. - Jmabel ! talk 05:20, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Uploading photos

can the photos contain nudity ? Briank1600 (talk) 01:01, 4 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Briank1600, Wikimedia Commons is not censored, so technically yes. We do have Category:Naturism for example. However, photos must be educationally usable. At least a part of the community is extra strict when it comes to nudity. Blurry dick pics absolutely won't fly. Also consider personality rights which are extra important when nudity is involved.

Ok to submit a preliminary image of a recent election, and has a Share Alike license?

[edit]

I created a preliminary map of the recent general election in Thailand. Basically, I filled in the winners of the respective constituencies. I do understand that the results are not official, and I am using a file that is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license.

Nonetheless, I was wondering if it was even possible to do so, and what are the proper procedures of adding such files. The last thing I want to do is to do things incorrectly. Kindly let me know. Rogerjamesdsouza (talk) 01:27, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Rogerjamesdsouza: I fixed the link to NELLA32.
I presume that the coloring is your work, and you should credit yourself explicitly for that as an author. After all, NELLA32 should not be held responsible by anyone for anything you might not have gotten right.
This needs categories.
Is this a map you intend to update over time, or is it intended to reflect permanently the state of the election results as of 9 February?
Looks otherwise OK to me. - Jmabel ! talk 06:11, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
The coloring is indeed my work, and I do not intend to hold NELLA32 responsible, so I will credit myself for this.
How do I include categories?
Yes, this is a map I intend to update over time, especially when the official results become known. Rogerjamesdsouza (talk) 14:45, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Rogerjamesdsouza: You do categories here just like on any other file: Commons:Categories#Categorizing pages. - Jmabel ! talk 00:59, 11 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

CC BY 3.0 Images from UT Health archive for upload (138 files)

[edit]

Stumbled across an image from a collection of apparently freely licensed photos while researching Hurricane Beluah for enwiki. The institutional archive they're on asserts that they are CC BY in the "Access Rights and Restrictions" field on each image's page. No results on Commons show up for the author Tuley, George F. These photos are not already present in Category:University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Here's their brief description for the collection

Is there an efficient way to upload them all? EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth (talk) 01:13, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth: "In the second step, the user can select one or multiple files (up to 50 files at the time) and begin uploading." – Commons:Upload Wizard

Help sorting out Estonian Air Force flags

[edit]

I noticed there is some mix-up with several images of the flags of the Estonian Air Force. Namely, images with "(reverse)" in the name actually contain the obverse (front side) of the flag, and vice versa. This has led to confusion and errors in articles, with some cases going by the name of the file and others by the contents.

In an attempt to fix this, I have uploaded the current, correct version of the obverse of the flag as File:Flag of the Estonian Air Force (obverse).png. I have also fixed the flag in a number of articles, mostly on enwiki, but several images still remain that are in use on various wikis:

(* Actually this appears to be a generic reverse used by a number of Estonian military flags, not specific to the Air Force.)

What would be the best way to sort these out, considering that most uses of all four files seem to be as the obverse of the flag?

  • Go through and edit each individual article? Seems a daunting task, especially since many are on wikis in languages and scripts I don't understand. Is there a bot for this?
  • Request (speedy?) deletion of the images and re-create as redirects to the correct image?
  • Directly change the images into redirects? Not sure if this is even possible.
  • Upload new versions to make the filenames match the image contents? AFAIK uploading duplicate images is not allowed.
  • Something else I'm not thinking of?

I appreciate any advice. Indrek (talk) 08:49, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Indrek: the best course is probably to indicate here what filenames should be changed to what other filenames, even if it means that some names need to be swapped with each other. An admin can do the necessary moves, but if there are names to be swapped, no one else can. - Jmabel ! talk 18:09, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well, based on the contents of the files, I might suggest the following filename swaps:
But this would create the issue that articles using the "(reverse)" images to show the obverse of the flag would now show the reverse of the flag instead and require updating to use the correct image. In which case they might as well be edited to use the one I uploaded (which is higher-res and contains the current version of the flag).
Also, this would still leave files of multiple versions of the flag, and one image with the incorrect word "State" in the filename, which I would prefer to avoid. Indrek (talk) 19:51, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Revisions (.png of naval message to USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723)

[edit]

I want to upload a .png of a naval message sent by Commander, Submarines, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, VADM George Emery, USN,to me (Commanding Officer, USS Oklahoma City (SSN 7123)) on 27 April 1995. The message is important to the submarine's participation in supporting the people of Oklahoma City following the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building the week before. I also have numbers of pictures taken by the crew and others on the waterfront which would help flesh out this historically important time. SoonerCO (talk) 20:59, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Your descriptions sounds like being about an official USN document, made under the responsibility of a member of that service branch. That's within the purview of {{PD-USNavy}}. Furthermore, most military messages follow a strict, nearly algorithmic pattern, where there's no place for individual creativity, so they would be unprotected anyway.
But for pictures taken by crew members, you will have to differentiate between pictures taken as and during military duty and pictures taken as private mementos. The former are welcome (again: PD-USNavy), the latter need individual rights releases.
Last but not least: keep COM:SCOPE and COM:PERSONAL in mind, but that's only a small hurdle if you already have a use case on Wikipedia ready. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:24, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Exactly. All things I'm interested in using to illustrate this history are the same: naval messages, memos, etc., and photos. SoonerCO (talk) 21:32, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Is there any issue left? So, as long as any media was produced as official duty by a member of the armed forces of the USA, the it's in the public domain. If private mementos are to be included, then a rights release through COM:VRT is necessary, see COM:THIRD. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 22:08, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
The only issue for me is the mechanics of uploading what I want to insert.
Oh, and apparently another: I just checked the USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723) wikipedia article and it has unexplainably reverted overnight to what it was before I revised it extensively. I am still in the process of compiling proper citations. Guess I'll just paste back in what I wrote. SoonerCO (talk) 14:50, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
mechanics of uploading Special:UploadWizard is pretty self-explanatory; as noted, you will want to use {{PD-USNavy}} in lieu of a license, there's a place in the wizard sequence where you can fill that in. As for using some of the images in an article in en-wiki, probably the easiest way to see how to do that is to look at the source wikitext and see how other images are inserted (yes, there is documentation, but it's probably quicker to look at a model). - Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question about Publishing the Estate of Paintings of an Artist Friend, Charles Swank

[edit]

A good friend before he died this past October gave me as his agent and friend all his remaining paintings and photocopies of his lifetime of work. He told me they were mine to sell or give away or burn. I would like to publish some of the best ones here on Wikimedia Commons. His widow has confirmed his wishes to have me publish them. There is nothing in writing to prove this arrangement. It was made with a hug and a handshake.

Any guidance as to whether I can proceed here...? Charles Swank - Artist (talk) 22:51, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Image in public domain?

[edit]

I found this image of Dan Helmer, which seems to be an Army photo and thus, as far as I understand, public domain, but the only source is his website. Not sure if it would still be allowed, or if there would be any way to find the original? (I've tried Google, reverse-image search.) Edit: same question for this photo of David Reid. JohnSon12a (talk) 00:34, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi JohnSon12a. Just going to clarify that an army photo would only be {{PD-USGov-Army}} if it was taken by an employee of the US federal government (e.g., an official US army photographer) as part of their official duties; photos taken by third-parties (i.e., someone who's not an "employee" of the US Army) could still be eligible for copyright protection. The photo you've linked to above for Helmer does look rather official and like the ones taken of US Army members, but the source you've provided isn't really an official government source per se; so, it's kind of hard to say with 100% certainly that this photo is OK for Commons. If the source, for example, attributes the photo to the US Army or some other US governmental department, then that could really clear things up. Given that the photo seems to come from a site controlled by the subject themselves, you could try contacting them and asking where the photo came from, I guess. I can't see the Reid photo you also mentioned because of the PC I'm using at the moment, but what I posted above would, in principle, also apply to it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:29, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I figured it would run into that tricky territory. I tried finding it elsewhere, but couldn't. I could try reaching out. JohnSon12a (talk) 01:33, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I would say so; Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany states that standard copyright persists for 70 years after lifelong protection, and the Max Wolf on the cover page appears to be this one, who died in 1932 (his postmortem copyright expired in 2002) Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 12:16, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

My files were renamed as I uploaded

[edit]

I am confused, this has never happened to me before. I uploaded two large batches of files using the upload wizard. Hundreds of photos in each batch. The first batch worked as always, the filenames were the ones I had on my files. The second batch did this very weird thing where the files were all renamed. My filenames were for example raffi̙-kojiaɲ-AM2000-0500.jpg, but the uploaded file was named Raffi_kojian-AM2000-0999_01.jpg for some reason, and then from 01 the numbers just go up.

This is very annoying for me because I can no longer match them up with the files on my computer, the file descriptions I have on my computer that I want to slowly add over time, and I can never match them to my original files by filename. It's a mess for me and I am wondering if there is a way to automatically fix this, or just delete them all and I try again, because this is not a helpful situation whatsoever. Also of course any tips on what could have caused it that I can avoid would be lovely.

Thanks RaffiKojian (talk) 04:54, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@RaffiKojian: Is it that you can't reconstruct the original filenames and do this as a series of moves? Because that would certainly be preferred delete and re-upload. I would have uploaded tens of thousands more photos to commons by now if the entire process didn't take so long, and if I could get uploading software like vicuna or commonist to work on my computer again. It's really a waste just having these sitting on my hard drive instead of here on commons. RaffiKojian (talk) 14:53, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Apparently all of my files were renamed in the last step of the process, and the only way I can see to stop it is to hand renumber/name thousands of files. I don't know why the site has decided to start renaming and renumbering files, but it's really annoying and pointless. It's already causing me problems finding specific photos I need to in order to add info to them, but I'm plowing ahead with uploading since I don't see a way around it... If so, you need to type {{Support}}, {{Oppose}}, etc. when typing in your reply (when replying, make sure in the dropdown of the button, Source editing is selected). @Nestadog: If you mean "File:John Langeloth Loeb Jr.jpg", then look at your talk page and at the deletion comment, which basically are to the effect that you did not provide evidence for the claims that you are the photographer and the holder of the copyright of this photo that is found elsewhere on the internet. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Nestadog This is a common misconception. You can release files just for use in Wikipedia, but we won't accept them. They must be free to use by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose. See COM:L. Creative Commons licenses are the easiest way to do this on Commons, and you can go through the UploadWizard for that. Since the image is widely used across the internet, you should also email VRT (read the page for information) proving that the image has truly been released by the copyright holder. First time uploading. Made a mess and I'm not sure how to fix it

[edit]

The file Viossa Flag.png had a notice to create an SVG for it, which I did. However, I made two versions of the flag. One was an exact recreation of the original file (which due to a mistake (not by a Wikimedia user, but the external source) had a ratio of 593:398), while the other one was a one with a restored ratio of 3:2. The community the flag represents voted to upload the 3:2 version to replace the old one and keep the old ratio as an alternate version. The problem is that since I uploaded this fixed version, I uploaded an image that was NOT an exact SVG recreation of the old file. Later, we came to the conclusion that we should've uploaded the fixed ratio version as something like Viossa Flag (3-2).svg. Right now, the flags have already been marked for deletion, since the fixed version doesn't have any external sources yet to confirm it's actually being used. I'm currently waiting for a file mover to rename the files to hopefully fix the issue. Please let me know how we should proceed. Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help. JanLisaki (talk) 01:26, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Convenience links: File:Viossa Flag.svg, File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
And also: File:Viossa Flag.png.
@JanLisaki: I've commented on the deletion request. I believe these will probably be kept.
The community the flag represents: that is rather confusing. Meaning that the speakers of this pidgin dialect had a formal vote? Or meaning something else?
fixed ratio aren't all SVG files "fixed ratio"? How would you make a variable-ratio SVG? Or do you just mean "preferred ratio"?
It would be much easier to help you if you were clear what you want done. Is there a file you are asking to have renamed? If so, as a non-filemover, for you the "move" tool on the file page will simply allow you to make a request to have the file renamed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:41, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the response.
The community is built around the central Discord server, with probably 99% of speakers being part of it. I held an informal poll in this server for which the handful of eldest community members were notified (though anyone was able to vote). This poll asked whether the 3:2 or botched 593:398 should be uploaded on Wikimedia, with the other one being considered an alternate version. This poll turned out 25 to 11 in favour of the 3:2 flag.
Yes, I meant "fixed" in the sense of "repaired, restored". Sorry if that was confusing.
What I am planning to do now is rename the 3:2 flag to Viossa Flag (3-2).svg, and then rename the 593:398 flag to Viossa Flag.svg. I already requested a file mover. I can't request the second renaming yet because currently the 3:2 flag is still "occupying" the name Viossa Flag.svg.
I was mainly wondering if this is a stupid way to go about things/if there is a better way to fix the mess this created. JanLisaki (talk) 10:12, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just dropping a small note to vouch for this user and the situation in general. I am a moderator of the Discord server in question, called simply "Viossa Diskordserver," which has over 6,000 members at this time, hundreds of which message regularly. We did indeed have an informal poll about this (relatively minor) aspect ratio file problem, and this change is part of our group efforts to work on the Viossa article on Wikipedia [2] to remove the issues since it's a high importance article.
Many thanks in advance to anyone on the helpdesk volunteer team who is able to assist with this small task!

JezzaHehn (talk) 17:20, 17 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, this is not "a stupid way to go about things."
If you cannot make the move requests in the normal manner, spell out here what file(s) you want moved to what new filename(s), but please do that explicitly in terms of file names, not circumlocutions like " the 3:2 flag". - Jmabel ! talk 03:11, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Apologies for the prior language barrier confusion. The requests were indeed made by User JanLisaki using the normal manner of the "move" tool. This help desk post is to confirm that the procedure was being followed correctly. I will rephrase the request here.
This is the original file: File:Viossa Flag.png
User JanLisaki is requesting that File:Viossa Flag.svg be renamed, and I personally suggst "Viossa Flag 3x2.svg" based on other files in this page: Category:SVG flags with an aspect ratio of 3:2
Following this, the flag File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg is requested to be renamed "Viossa Flag.svg" to match the original PNG version of the file (linked above).
Again thanks for your time. Looks like you are a veteran of Commons and I salute you for your years of service 🫡 JezzaHehn (talk) 03:30, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
It looks like ChiK declined the move, most likely because the request gave no indication of the discussion here (e.g. via a permalink). @ChiK: do you still feel that the move was wrong after reading this? - Jmabel ! talk 07:46, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I kindly confirm that you may go ahead with the proposed rename. ChiK (talk) 08:10, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Deceased fathers' art photos

  • Yes. Presuming no other relative has claim to have inherited the copyright, you have rights to license and share your father's work. Commons even has license templates for such situations, eg {{Cc-zero-heirs}} (for basically releasing to public domain) or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} (for requiring attribution). Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:06, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • If the main thing you are going to be doing here is uploading his work, I recommend explaining that (and your relation) on your user page. Also: Infrogmation's response presumes that your father's work is in scope for Commons. If he was at all a notable artist, it would be. Otherwise, it might not be: works by the average person who paints, even the average person with an art degree, would not be in scope. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 20 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
